Tetracycline as acne treatment

Tetracycline for acne treatment is a common antibiotic prescribed for acne sufferers. Unlike Minocycline, it does not cause hyposensitivity and for this reason is more prescribed for acne sufferers, including those with adult cystic acne. When the patient is allergic to tetracycline, other antibiotics for acne may be prescribed such as doxycycline or erythromycin.

The tetracycline atibiotic treatment for acne starts at 500mg per day and once the acne starts to vanish, the dose is reduced to 250 mg. Your doctor is the only one who can advice you about taking this drug based on your medical history. There are many situation when you are not allowed taking this antibiotic and your doctor knows best. As a general rule, you should avoid taking Tetracycline if you are pregnant or plan for having a baby, you are  breastfeeding, you suffer from liver or kidney diseases and you are allergic to tetracycline or any other antibiotic.

Tetracycline requires someone to take the drug on a full stomach to have a maximum effect. This can be quite challenging in teenagers, especially boys, who are actively eating. For this reason some doctors may prefer to prescribe other type of antibiotics for acne, such as Minocycline. The difference is that the latter is cost much more, especially if it is a branded Minocycline and not generic one.

If you are a woman and take tetracycline and birth control pill on the same time, you have to know that birth control pills may not work while taking it. For this reason is best to use other method of contraception to avoid pregnancy and the risks for foetus associated with taking antiotics in the first trimester of pregnancy.

There are some tetracycilne side-effects which you may notice them, but most are minor. For example, people taking tetracycline for acne may experience sensitivity to sun. It is best advised to stay away from sunbaths and wear long clothing to cover your body.
